Understanding the IVF Process: A Step-by-Step Guide
From ovarian stimulation to embryo transfer — what really happens during IVF.
IVF can feel overwhelming at first, but it follows a clear sequence of steps. Here is what a typical cycle looks like. Step 1: Evaluation Blood tests, ultrasound and semen analysis help your doctor design a personalised protocol. Step 2: Ovarian stimulation (10–12 days) Daily hormone injections help several eggs mature at once. We monitor progress with scans and blood tests. Step 3: Egg retrieval A short day-care procedure under sedation. Most women go home the same day. Step 4: Fertilization In the lab, eggs are combined with sperm (conventional IVF) or a single sperm is injected into each egg (ICSI). Step 5: Embryo culture Embryos grow for 3–5 days. Day-5 blastocysts often give the best chance of implantation. Step 6: Embryo transfer and pregnancy test The best embryo is gently placed in the uterus. A blood test about two weeks later confirms pregnancy. Every patient is different — your doctor will explain which steps apply to you and what to expect at each stage.
